He is one of the most widely-recognized unpartnered fathers in the world. Yuki Ohno has spent the past two decades cheering on his son from the stands, prodding him to believe in himself and to never give up. His son, Apolo Anton Ohno, grew up to develop the most decorated American Winter Olympian after winning eight medals in compact track speed skating. Ohno told Northwest Asian Weekly that while being a single father has been the most challenging experience of his life, it has also been the most rewarding.

“It was tough. At the beginning, I did not own confidence that I could do this alone. I wasn’t sure at all, but I had no choice but to do it,” he said.

A fierce competitor, if Apolo feels he can still be one of the best in the earth when the Winter Olympics are held in Sochi, Russia – it's difficult to imagine he won't be on the ice for his fourth Olympics.

However, once the Vancouver games come to a close, Apolo said he'll be enjoying a pleasant long break. But will he be doing it alone?
