LGBT+ Art and Performances in Athens

Atopos CVC is a non-profit arts foundation in Metaxourgeio, with a strong yet playful focus on fashion, queer persona, and alternative readings of gender politics. Recent highlights include a collectible tome full of erotic and bizzare nudes sourced from the Internet, and an installation featuring plush, oversized vulvas by Greek artist Antigoni Tsagkaropoulou.
The Athens Museum of Queer Arts (AMOQA) suggests an institution with a formal structure and scale. In fact, AMOQA is a tiny initiative that organises special nights, workshops and performances related to sexuality and gender in various venues. It has become a gathering point for the homosexual community, as it supports revolutionary creativity and social inclusivity.
Founded by American performance artist and curator Macklin Kowal, Sub Rosa Space is an experimental undertaking space in downtown Athens consecrated to experimental performance art surrounding issues of gender, identity, and the body. Housed in a former office space, Sub Rosa often hosts artists for brief residencies.

Gay Athens

All the same-sex attracted stories about the ancient Greeks, united with a sunny climate and fascinating history, has turned Greece into a major gay destination. The gay mecca continues to be the island of Mykonos, while the scene in the capital city remains rather low-key. Still, Athens has its number of queer hotspots, and the gay pride events, although small, are becoming bigger each year. Before moving on to Mykonos (or Lesbos, in the ladies' case), these are the gay places to check out in Athens:

Gay Beach

Limanakia B is the gay sunbathing and swimming area in Athens (it’s surrounded by rocks, not sand). To get there, obtain the tram to Glyfada, followed by bus E22 to Limanakia (the third stop). When you step off the bus, descend towards the water and choose the matchless rock to rest on. Nudity is common, and don't be surprised to see "private" encounters between men in the caves.

Gay Bars

Big Bar

Athens’ first bear block offers reasonably-priced drinks, and plays synthpop, new wave and ebm sounds throughout the week.

GAY ATHENS

ABOUT THE CITY
Athens isn't just an LGBTQ-friendly city, it's a place with a very prolonged history of sexual liberalism that prides itself on catering to all its communities, affording everyone the widest possible range of choices. While the history of homosexuality is an essential part of Greek culture, Greeks are very covert about their sexuality, possibly due to latest Orthodoxy. Homosexuality is completely legal in Greece and more accepted in Athens than elsewhere in the country.

Introduction to Gay Greece

Greek society continues to be shrouded by a traditional air of conservative, faith-based and family-oriented ideology, but the LGBT scene is slowly and surely catching up with the repose of the western nature. In Athens there are lovely and lively core neighborhoods such as Monastiraki and Gazi where queer mingling blossoms in serious, with a large number of excellent clubs, cafes and bars offering quality entertainment attracting bright, lovely crowds. Top island destinations like Mykonos and Santorini as well as several other options that own become more gay-accommodating over the years such as Skiathos and Paros, also offer the idyllic combination of stunning locations and top notch venues with an exciting and enticing gay scene. Greece's northern capital, Thessaloniki, is also becoming a popular destination for gay tourists, something enthusiastically backed by the city's progressive Mayor Yiannis Boutaris, with some great events (including an annual international gay film festival) and loca
