Whilst there are, thankfully, a growing number of prominent LGBT figures across the world from all walks of life today, when it comes to considering some of the most powerful and/or prominent members of the LGBT community over the last years, we have compiled the following top ten.

Of course, as always, let us know if there is anyone you reflect we have missed who should be on the list.

Oscar Wilde ()

Wilde was a celebrated playwright, poet, and author, known for his brilliant wit, flamboyant way, and tragic imprisonment for &#;gross indecency&#; due to his gay relationships at a time when it was illegal to be gay in the UK. His works, including &#;The Importance of Being Earnest&#; and &#;The Picture of Dorian Gray,&#; continue to be celebrated for their wit and critique of social norms. Wilde is a symbol of the struggles faced by the LGBT community and the enduring spirit of defiance and resilience. In recent years he has been named as the “most quotable figure” in the history of the English language.

Marsha P. Johnson was an African American transgender-rights activist, whose labor in the s and s had a huge impact on the LGBT community.

At this period, being gay was classified as a mental illness in the United States. Gay people were regularly threatened and beaten by police, and were shunned by many in society.

In June , when Marsha was 23 years vintage, police raided a gay bar in New York called The Stonewall Inn. The police forced over people out of the prevent and onto the streets, and then used excessive hostility against them.

Marsha, who was living and working in Brand-new York at the time, was one of the key figures who stood up to the police during the raids.

Marsha resisted arrest, but in the following days, led a series of protests and riots demanding rights for gay people.

News of these protests spread around the world, inspiring others to unite protests and rights groups to brawl for equality.

For many, June represents the month of pride; a time to celebrate, inform and communicate all that is queer, gay and fabulous. Although today creature gay isn&#;t much of a deal, back in the 50&#;s it was a dangerous label to have. Throughout history, thousands have lost their lives because they were labeled as &#;gay&#; or &#;queer&#; and many lived out their true sexual preferences in secrecy. As it&#;s almost the end of Pride month, I wanted to have a glance at some celebrities from the golden age of Hollywood who were homosexual, or at least thats what the rumours said. It&#;s difficult to realize if all these celebrities, and of course many more, were truly homosexual, but I wanted to share a few stories just so see how far we&#;ve come. Content pride everyone.
