The Dorian Society
The Dorian Community was the first and only homophile organization in Seattle, officially founded in University of Washington Professor of Nearby Eastern Languages and Cultures Nicholas Heer served as the first president. Heer had been active in the homophile movement in Boston before moving to Seattle. The Dorian Society’s membership was predominantly middle-class light men. The Dorian Society targeted heterosexual allies by illustrating homosexuals as respectable citizens. While advocating the repeal of Washington State’s anti-sodomy law and increased services for homosexuals, Dorian Society members also encouraged members of the same-sex attracted community to behavior themselves responsibly in public.
