Rami Malek spoke about how Freddie Mercury’s bisexuality is represented in the new movie Bohemian Rhapsody.
Said Malek to GSN’s Jamie Tabberer: “I wish everyone to be represented by this film. I consider that’s exactly who Freddie Mercury was and is, is someone who’s inclusive of everyone. He never wanted to be categorized or labeled. He just was. Whatever he was should possess been okay. And I think that’s the way he sees it.. If you’re out there and you’re exactly who you long to be, then I think for you Freddie Mercury might be a hero. He is for me.”
Added Malek: “Brian May told me this when we were talking about shooting the film. He said ‘There are a lot of people out there who don’t realize how significant of a death sentence it was. Over 35 million people acquire died of AIDS. It’s a pandemic that still exists. I was just in Swaziland seeing what Red and the Mercury Phoenix Trust have done. Last night marked one of the biggest nights on the Award Season calendar as the Oscars strike LA to celebrate the best of film. The big winner of the night was Bohemian Rhapsody, which took home four of its five nominations.
One of its biggest wins came in the shape of Best Actor, which went to Rami Malek for his portrayal of Queen frontman and star, Freddie Mercury.
However, Malek had been criticised during the Award Season circuit for failing to directly note Mercury's sexuality or his experience living with HIV and dying from AIDS.
The closest Malek got to referencing these things was in his BAFTAs speech when he said: "To the greatest outsider of them all, for entity so unwavering and unflinching and uncompromising in every which way. Thank you, Freddie Mercury, again."
