San Diego and Tijuana are put to celebrate Pride, hosting a range of LGBTQ+-centered events throughout June and July.

Pride Month honors the history, culture and contributions of the LGBTQ+ people through marches, parades and artistic showcases.

While Pride is traditionally observed in June to honor the anniversary of the Stonewall uprising — when community members fought back against police raids at the Stonewall Inn in New York City’s Greenwich Village — San Diego holds its largest Pride festival in July. According to San Diego Pride, this tradition began in the s, when organizers moved the main events to elude scheduling conflicts with other major festivals around the world and to maximize attendance by avoiding June gloom.

From attending Tijuana’s downtown march to traveling with the San Diego-based Lgbtq+ Sol Collective

Colorful floats will soon glide through Hillcrest as part of the San Diego Pride Parade -- a time-honored tradition in America's Finest City that honors the LGBTQ+ community.

LGBTQ+ members will be joined by allies to march along the route uptown in honor of their continued call for equity and acceptance. Those who are planning on showing their support by attending the parade can consider the following to plan their trip:

When is the parade?

The San Diego Pride Procession will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July

Folks can await the event to be held rain or glow, according to the San Diego LGBT Pride organization organization.

Where to park

Pride organizers are making it easier for participants to show up by car. Free parking will be available at the Old Naval Hospital on Park Boulevard and President’s Way. Once there, visitors can take a free shuttle that will drop off passengers at the intersection of Richmond and Essex Streets.

The shuttle service will be accessible as follows:

  • Pride Parade Route 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
    • Catch a free ride from the Old Naval Hospital parkin

While Pride events find underway across the country, some who are new to San Diego may be searching for San Diego Movement Month events and notice the June calendar lacking a bit.

That's not to say there aren't Pride Month events to be had. Just delay one more month and celebrations will be held almost daily. But it leaves some wondering, 'Why is San Diego Pride in July instead of June, the widely recognized Pride Month in the Merged States?'

Well, 50, annual attendees of Lgbtq+ fest in America's Finest City can't be wrong: Pride in July is perfect.

Sure, but why, why July? and not June, as is the case for Pride in L.A., San Francisco, Modern York City and most other places? And how did that come to be?

The story of San Diego's Identity, like all of the LGBTQ+ celebrations around the nation, begins on June 28, , in NYC, Chicago and Los Angeles, with marches held on the one-year anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising, when NYPD plainclothes officers raided the Stonewall Inn on Christopher Highway in Manhattan.
